Double Quintet focuses on the relationship between two sound worlds – harmonic and percussive clicks. These sounds are presented linearly at the beginning, with each gesture, characterised by an over-arching acceleration, is the growth of a single note and followed by the percussive clicks. Gradually, these sounds develop to become superimposed on each other, developing independently in its own contrapuntal texture. The characteristic acceleration is also constructed around the piece’s formal structure. Eventually, these materials start to converge into a unified timbre across the entire ensemble. This final timbre is a representation of the choral texture taking on percussive qualities such as semi air tones and flautando strings, before finally dying out.
