Gambir Sawit

  • DBS Foundation Outdoor Theatre at Esplanade 1 Esplanade Drive Singapore, 038981 Singapore (map)

The Javanese gamelan is an orchestra consisting of singers and a large number of mostly percussion instruments—bronze gongs, gong-chimes, metalophones, xylophones, drums and more. Developed over centuries in Javanese royal courts and villages, today the beautiful, complex music is admired all over the world. This performance is a unique opportunity to hear some of the best-loved classical compositions from the gamelan repertory. One of the oldest and most intoxicatingly beautiful evergreen pieces is called Gambir Sawit (a gambier plant), which is said to symbolise the spiritual gambira (joy) of music-making—a joy which the performers hope to share with the audience.
