Forest, Sea, and Rather Destructive Heroes: Three Javanese Shadow Puppet Plays
Forests fall. Seas boil. Animals are slaughtered. An epidemic is unleashed. Such are the deeds of cherished heroes in these performances of Javanese shadow puppet theatre (πΈπ’πΊπ’π―π¨ π¬πΆππͺπ΅)βreimaginings of the Mahabharata and Ramayana that unravel the deep entanglements between human ambition, civilisation, and the natural world. Recognized by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Cultural Heritage, πΈπ’πΊπ’π―π¨ π¬πΆππͺπ΅ blends storytelling, visual imagery, and gamelan music into a multi-sensory performance.
